Wake me in September

Awful smells, s l o w internet, and a personal malaise are hallmarks of life during the rainy season. Insects and thunder figure prominently.
Newbies Perl and Ruby are a bright spot

The sterilization clinic in May went well enough.
Thank you to Fanny from Wilberth tortillaria for making/donating lunch for the surgical team!
Follow up lasted well after the clinic. Once the dogs spayed at the clinic (including Soliteria!) recovered, we had 5 more dogs spayed in Merida using left over supplies. Thank you Pets & Co!
Since then the town has poisoned strays again, including some that had been sterilized. If that pisses you off, let the mayor know!
Perl and Tupo safe at home

In June we had Nico and Coco spayed -and their sisters (thanks to the help of Angel). So relieved to have all the mosquito shack girls sterilized!
We didn't really believe we could make it happen.

After months with no results from treatments for fungus, we had a biopsy done and it turns out Nico has a problem with her immune system. Poor baby.
Since we've been treating that she has started to put on weight and regrow her fur and lost nails.
Airborne Nico

June was the first anniversary of the arrival of Junebug and Zoila.
Strong, smart, beautiful and a bit weird. They are a handful!

August is sweet, silly Murci's third anniversary.

We intend to start a CADA website for updates and fund raising that focuses on strays and emergency cases in town. There is obviously overlap, but I think of this blog as a family album. Until then I'll try to be better about mentioning things we do outside of our home (usually with the help of fellow CADA member Jacky).
3 legs and all cute

poor girl got hit by a car but she's on the mend.

We recently were surprised to find out that Linda has bad hips. That means going swimming instead of on walks, but she isn't complaining.
Linda, Perl and Ruby love the water!

Happy, wet Linda Loca
Ruby is a fierce little beauty

Perl is a charmer (and smitten with Archie)

All done swimming, going home.

Where has the time gone?

It has been too long since I've updated. So much to cover!
Nov 16, 2015 Tupo arrives. He was the runt of the mosquito shack litter.
Cookie again proves herself to be a patient big sister.

No one else wanted the little guy and we were worried he wasn't eating enough, with so much competition. Tupo means something like runt in Mayan. Closer to 'the last little bit'.

The traditional 1st bath photo.

A quiet pause after a long day.
Tupo naps on a beard pillow.

Zoila shows Tupo how to dig a hole.

Big sisters are the best! Cookie wrestles with Tupo.

December 1st we brought in Coco, the 2nd smallest of the litter.
She was a little skinny and had a sore leg, but was otherwise fine.
Cookie makes Coco's acquaintance.

First bath for Coco.
She had enough dirt in her ears to grow a plant.

Coco and Hazel meet.

Coco checks out the yard.
She is calm and sensible (and pretty) like her mother Sola.

Monkey is recovering from surgery to remove bladder stones.
She's doing great now, but needs to be on the same expensive diet as Maggie. Apparently the little white shaggy dogs are prone to it.
Otto, Monkey and Tupo.

Monkey poses with the stones Dra Sandra removed.

Just to keep things interesting, we had company over the holidays.
Sweet Xmul was here and Kiki's 2 dogs stayed for a few days.
PupG kisses Xmul and Zoila hangs out with her new little buddy, Chiquita.

Group shot with Zoila and sister Junebug in surgical collars.
They have both been spayed and recovered beautifully.

Siblings Coco and Tupo nap on Sean.

December 12th, not quite 2 weeks after Coco's arrival, Sean brought the last unplaced pup home. She's bigger than her siblings and shyer.
We call her Nico.

Nico's 1st bath. Mega and Steve say hello.

She has a skin problem that we had diagnosed at the clinic on Sunday!
Dozens were treated and/or vaccinated (5 in 1), one dog had to be put down, and they managed to neuter 2 -despite not planning to preform surgeries this time! Pretty good considering we were thinking of canceling it.
Nico is all legs and paws! Her dad must be Ringo and he's a big boy!

Another September

Isn't Zoila getting big? At 4 months old she's 1/2 as tall as Xmul!
At the slow rate fund raising is going we'll be able to have her spayed at the clinic.

With the arrival of rain I built a dog house for her mom and sister (the strays) which was promptly stolen. Since then both dogs have gone missing.
We hope for the best but they were probably poisoned like the dogs of friends in town. To compound that loss most of theirs were sterilized, some at the last clinic. Senseless.
I'm trying to focus on the little victories to get through this accursed season.
The heart marking on Zoila's nose suits her -she's a sweetheart!

With so many dogs September is ...pungent, with a fair amount of energy spent on keeping the outside outside. Thunder, no matter how distant, is cause for dog reactions varying from amplified to petrified.
It is nice to see the flora enjoying the weather.
The pitaya in the sea grape has finally flowered -as did a coconut palm!

After dinner is play time! There are at least 4 distinct playgroups in this shot. Knowing them as individuals is the key to maintaining harmony. Some dogs (for example Twiggy, black dog w/ orange collar) are like the kids that always take advantage of substitute teachers.

Upside down Cookie is the center of attention.
Puppy wrestling at dusk.

Heading out on a morning walk with Lily on a leash to slow the pace.

Two pairs of sisters on my heel.
Eve and Blue set a great example for June and Zoila.

Zoila and Junebug out and about in their new big girl collars.

Here comes Junebug!

Zoila!

A review of my Aug/Sept posts reveal that it is traditionally a trying time.
For example it has been 4 years since the appearance of the Tribe.
In retrospect I don't know how we managed!
