lost and found

New life in the palm tree.
Two chicks, days before they left their impressively engineered nest.

One less friend. Our Twiggy was suffering from multiple health problems and had a rapid decline. This is one of the last pictures of her, fittingly between her sister/rival Xmul, and Xasu who helped raise them both.

JoJo, Rose and Rocky have been spayed, cones are off, and stitches are out.  Not a moment too soon for us; they were dangerous with those things on!

Rose is as big as Xmul now. All 3 of them are.

Xmul, Zasu, June, Murci and Tuesday. Zasu helped raise them all.
She's 20 years old and always in the middle of things.

Excited faces...what could it be? Zasu knows.

Sean found her along the road by herself. She wasn't from any of the nearby houses and she nearly climbed into the Jeep on her own.

1st bath (and an undeniable resemblance to Twiggy).

We're calling her Brooklyn.

Big ears and markings like Twiggy, but not the ornery temperament. We were hoping for a break from the constant influx of dogs (and eventual spayings) but she has made sure we don't regret it by being an absolute sweetheart and the least trouble a puppy can be.

Look at those long legs -she may end up Twiggy-sized. $o much dog food!

Rocky was her size a few months ago

She and the older pups play all day and half the night, with the occasional nap.

damp days

I'll update on the saga of the strays and puppies soon.
Suffice it to say that so far they're doing well.

I haven't been taking my camera on walks so here are a few shots of home life.
Days have been mercifully uneventful.
Sugar and daughter Minya are the center of attention.

Sugar is the least graceful cat I have ever met!
It's only a matter of time until I get video of her falling off of something.
She is also a loudmouth!

It's easy to be the center of attention here -just eat something.

3 spotted dogs, Pete, Gracie and Archie.

Beautiful Shirley loves her toys.

Miles and Zasu have seen a lot together-
from Pittsburgh, to Portland, to the Yucatan.

Brothers Pete and Steve asleep by my desk.
When they're awake they are in constant competition.

One of the palm trees has started to produce coconuts.
The bees love it!

The pitayas produced 2 gorgeous fruits.
We ate one and left one for the birds.

Large mantis on a 'mother of thousands' plant.
Both are awesomely creepy.

Cookie and Eggs

This little angel was wandering alone at the market, apparently waiting for the arrival of the strange bearded man she had heard tales of from the other strays.
She's in better health than many that have ended up here, just the usual fleas/ticks and a spot of mange on her face.

Reggie checks out the new puppy smell.

Lap nap with an audience. Tori's face says it all.

The traditional 1st bath photo.

We're calling her Cookie.

Cookie and Linda are already buddies.

You're it!

You're mine!

This hummingbird built a nest just above the doggy chaos.

She laid her 1st egg on Valentine's day. Thanks to worldofhummingbirds I learned she would likely lay one more the next day.

She did!

Barking at thunder. Daily.

George and Tori, just because they look nice together.

I'm finally uploading a few of the videos Sean has taken on runs. This one is from February (and the camera is waterproof).

Shirley thinks rainy days are fine if you have enough toys.
This is from the end of June.

A few seconds from September.

Zoot enjoys a lovely September morning.
A hummingbird takes a break from hovering but not eating.
Tiny assassin bugs on a sea grape.
Smiley face spider in our neem tree.
Sean found this little red-cheeked mud turtle too close to the road. He posed for a few photos before being relocated to the woods. Identified thanks to Jim Conrad's excellent site (link page right).

Sugar's kittens have been spayed and neutered! Minya didn't let the collar get in her way.
Recent family portrait. Sugar, her doppelgänger Falafel, Kevin, Cali and Minya.

The Long Rain

"The rain continued. It was a hard rain, a perpetual rain, a sweating and steaming rain; it was a mizzle, a downpour, a fountain, a whipping at the eyes, an undertow at the ankles; it was a rain to drown all rains and the memory of rains."
Ok, it hasn't really been that bad, I just loved Ray Bradbury as a kid!
No hurricanes or typhoons so I've got little to complain about.
A big mantis suns on the clothesline.

Helpxer Martina stayed and helped out for a few weeks.  A thoroughly uncomfortable season to visit, but Linda and Stella are always happy to have a new friend!
Because of  Martina chatting with a few soldiers at the base near us, we were able to have a dog that lives there spayed.  Unsurprisingly, she also had Ehrlichiosis.  Fortunately, one of the soldiers agreed to give her the necessary antibiotics everyday for 3 weeks.  Hurray, she is now healthy and infertile!  Thanks Martina, for everything!
Also, thanks to the people who have donated, through Martina as well as online.  Funds went towards a spaying, antibiotics and a new large bottle of Ivermectin.  Enough for hundreds of injections!

Crazy-eyed Pete claims a toy Martina brought.

Good girls coming home on a morning walk -everybody cross the road together.

The destructo-duo of Hazel and Murci, best friends and partners in crime.

Hazel plays with her Zogoflex.
I can't say enough good things about their products!
Most toys don't survive a week, but the Zogoflex toys are still fine nearly 2 years later ...and they float ...and are made of recycled materials!

Siblings Reggie and Tuesday nap under my chair.

An injured young cormorant came to our gate a few days ago.  It couldn't fly and seemed to calmly be asking for assistance.  This is why it bothers me when people speed by in their vehicles.  It's a beach road, there is a lot of wildlife!  Slow down!

The bird wasn't thrilled about having to go into a crate, but Sean insisted then took it to Semarnat to be treated and released.

This darling mamacita is always hanging around near our house.  We've grown very fond of her!  We've treated her for ticks/fleas and given her an injection of birth control.  It should keep her from getting pregnant for 6 months to a year; the poor girl needs a break!  Over the couple of years we've known her, she is usually pregnant or trailing puppies.

She's a great little dog. I'm guessing that she's 3 or 4. We would love to find her a loving home!

Nice dogs, nice light, random shot.
Too many to name, Hazel in front.
